$toktrax Overview and Quick $tart
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Thank you for taking the time to evaluate $toktrax. This file
provides a general overview of $toktrax installation and
operation, and hopefully will allow you to start using the
programs without reading the detailed documentation. Although
$toktrax is designed to be "intuitive", I'm well aware that one
man's intuition is another man's enigma. But the main ideas
really are very simple.
To properly install $toktrax on your hard disk, simply type
INSTALL followed by the drive and directory where you want the
files copied. For example, INSTALL C:\STX4 will create directory
STX4 on drive C: and place all of the $toktrax files there. It
also will create the ST.BAT and $TOKTRAX.DEF files.
The $ETUP program will next be executed. $ETUP allows you to
change the defaults for several parameters needed by $toktrax.
These are stored in the file $TOKTRAX.DEF. Most of these
parameters should default to acceptable values, and you can
press ESCAPE to exit back to the DOS prompt.
To run $toktrax, you can type in either the full name $TOKTRAX
or the shorthand ST command, and press ENTER. The various
functions and modules are all accessible from menus; you can use
the arrow keys or mouse to make selections. There are two main
programs, both of which are included on disk #1. (Note that
references to "Disk #1" and "Disk #2" apply to the download
version of $toktrax. Disk #1 contains files that are absolutely
required. Disk #2 includes less essential, but still very
important, files.)
$TOKTRAX.EXE is the charting program. A charting program must
have historical data, so when you tell $toktrax to load data
it lists all of the files with extension STK. Three sample
STK files are provided. Just move the cursor over the one you
want to load and press ENTER. Then press ENTER again to load
ALL of the data. Other menu selections allow you to manually
enter stock data, view data in graphic or tabular format, and
access other $toktrax programs.
$TOKFOL.EXE is the portfolio module. $tokFol allows you to enter
stock transactions and dividends so that the value of your
holdings can be evalulated. If Report is selected from the
menu, both summary and detail reports are created on disk, and
you are offered the option of printing or viewing the report.
Information provided in $tokFol is also made available for
display on the $toktrax charts. Multiple portfolios are
supported. Files used by $tokFol have extensions FOL and DIV.
Disk #2 includes several "utility" files. While not absolutely
necessary, they do provide some very useful functions:
$TOKCONV.EXE is a data conversion program that can update your
STK data files if you have access to online services such as
CompuServe, GEnie, Prodigy or Dow Jones. If you don't have a
modem, you'll have to input the data manually.
$TOKSYM.EXE provides access to the symbols and company names
stored in the STOKSYM.DAT and FUNDSYM.DAT files. Whenever you
select a stock for loading into $toktrax or $tokFol, these
files are searched so the company name can be displayed. Of
course there's no guarantee that all companies are included.
ANALY$T.EXE does a statistical analysis of all the STK data
files, then graphically compares the current value of each
stock in standard deviations from its average value.
The documentation, which also is provided on disk #2, is fairly
detailed and should answer most of your questions. You can
either print it, or "view" it on your screen by going to the DOS
prompt and typing LIST $TOKTRX4.DOC, which uses the LIST program
to browse through the file. A detailed description of the
various menu selections begins on page 23.
NOTE: One place where some users have had problems is with
creating new files. If you decide to start entering IBM stock
data, for example, just select "update/create Data files" from
the opening menu. You'll next see a table containing all of the
existing data files. To add IBM to that table, simply type IBM
and press ENTER. You'll be asked for the date, high, low, close
and volume, and the data will be saved in file IBM.STK. (By the
way, the same procedure is used in the $TOKFOL program to create
new portfolios.)
